How to Create a Pros and Cons List

A pros and cons list gives you a simple way to organize a decision. Online versions can also help you compare factors that affect one another.

Use these five steps to build your list.

1. Write down the decision

Start by stating the choice clearly. Are you deciding whether to relocate, take a job, or go out for dinner instead of eating at home? Define the alternatives along with their consequences and opportunity costs.

2. Create pros and cons columns

Put the arguments for the decision in one column and the arguments against it in the other. Brainstorm freely at first. An item does not need to seem large or important to earn a place on the list.

Common factors include:

  • Happiness
  • Financial gain or loss
  • Family
  • Immediate results

The list is personal. Two people facing the same choice may write very different lists because they value different things.

3. Fill both columns

Use words or short phrases instead of paragraphs. Writing ideas down may reveal which direction you prefer.

If you still feel conflicted, finish the exercise and consider repeating it. Start with five items in each column, review the list, then add five more and review it again. One side may end up longer than the other, and that is fine. The aim is to understand the choice well enough to make it with confidence and avoid buyer's remorse.

4. Give each item a value

The number of items on each side does not tell the whole story. Some reasons matter more than others, so give them more weight. On pros-cons-list.com, you can mark an item as "more important" to assign it a higher value.

5. Make a choice

Use the finished list to choose between the options. Even when it does not produce an immediate answer, the exercise can teach you about your priorities and point to other decisions you need to make.
